Joe Barton: Psychopath

I am not a psychiatrist and not wont to finish statements like that with “and don’t play one on TV.” But I have always been interested in the rarely-cited trait of psychopaths: the inability to appreciate consequence. While the usual suspects and hyper partisan DEMS-NBC repeat without surcease Barton’s insane comments that POTUS’s brokered settlement with BP was a shakedown, I submit that a reason for such a statement is a trait of Barton and most successful pols, viz. he’s a psychopath. Not the murderous, serial killer type. They in fact are the minority.

It’s the person who is so fueled by a pathological impulsivity that he can’t button his lip or realize that the sentiment — which has a gram of truth to it, let’s be fair — he expresses will fall on media deaf ears and has grave political consequences. So tethered to oil interests is Barton and so keen was he on reminding them of his Pavlovian obeisance that he ended up with an apologia and act of contrition to the very folks whose negligence may have destroyed portions of our environment to an extent unimagined.

Neuroscientists are examining and studying this trait of the psychopath in greater detail.

Previous research on psychopathy has focused on what these individuals lack — fear, empathy and interpersonal skills. The new research, however, examines what they have in abundance — impulsivity, heightened attraction to rewards and risk taking. Importantly, it is these latter traits that are most closely linked with the violent and criminal aspects of psychopathy. [Source]
