There are those who are comfortable with their faith and then there are those I’d like to introduce you to below. They’re angry, addled and suffer from a chronic pique. Their faith is secondary to the wrath they feel for anyone who might call into question the validity and bases for their conspicuous and highly suspect piety. As Tolstoy noted, history would be a wonderful thing if only it were true. And their fanciful and manufactured on the spot historical references would likewise be a wonderful thing if indeed they were true also.
Herein is a tutorial of sorts that will give you an overview of my favorite Bill of Rights provision, the Establishment Clause. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” And its simplicity is misleading. More cases have been decided on this seemingly straightforward provision than most lay folk can imagine. And it’s best described as follows. It’s not what you think.
Everyone has their favorite historical (as in actually historical) fact that destroys this insane notion that we’re a Christian religion. The Treaty of Tripoli (Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary), signed in pre-Gaddafi 1796, in its Article 11 was most clear. The limpidity and pellucidity are most striking.
As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen,—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. [e.s.]
And now some fan mail. In response to a PIX 11 commentary (infra), a number of self-styled defenders of Christ cobbled together some noteworthy responses to my daring to suggest that the Constitution’s First Amendment Establishment Clause be adhered to. Billets doux from the marginally functional Boeotian are contained herein edited only for the vaguest lip service to decency.
Seems like for someone all bent about the government’s preservation and protection of “In God We Trust”, you have no problem comparing your one-word name to that of the Almighty – invoking the monosyllabic attribute of a deity and reserving that privilege for yourself.
You use the term God in the first line of your own blog:
“Let’s get to the first oft-asked question: What’s with the name “Lionel”? No last name? Nope. Mononymous, like God. Get over it.”
So you compare your one-word named status to that of God’s but have a hard time when the Gov’t seeks to preserve the word “God” on our currency?
You’re either ignorant or a hypocrite. I choose [sic] …hypocrite.
Someone named G (not to be confused with my meteorologist colleague Mister G) writes:
