LIONEL PODCAST: Fascists Are After Your Kids. And They’re Winning.

The numbers of stories are escalating. Without surcease. And they’re mind-boggling.

  • A kid arrested for burping in class.
  • The same kid a week before was stripped searched for suspicion of marijuana possession. Of course, nothing was found.
  • A seven year-old with autism was handcuffed after being “agitated.” State law prohibited any type of manual seizure for children under 11.
  • A girl was arrested after stating she didn’t want to sit next to that “stinky boy.”
  • The girl who’s arrested, suspended or combinations thereof for bringing a Midol or aspirin to school.
  • The kid who’s busted for bringing a knife to school to cut a sandwich.
  • The kid who’s arrested/suspended for hugging a student or wearing a T-shirt or you name it.

There’s literally nothing, nothing you could imagine that couldn’t warrant an arrest or suspension in the new era of the zero tolerance policy.

And let me introduce you to the “school to prison pipeline.” The ACLU defines it thusly:

a disturbing national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Many of these children have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse or neglect, and would benefit from additional educational and counseling services. Instead, they are isolated, punished and pushed out. “Zero-tolerance” policies criminalize minor infractions of school rules, while high-stakes testing programs encourage educators to push out low-performing students to improve their schools’ overall test scores. Students of color are especially vulnerable to push-out trends and the discriminatory application of discipline.

It’s getting worse unless and until you say something about it. But first, acquaint yourself with how we’re becoming habituated to the problem.
