On this day of fetishized obeisance to war. As we pretend to care about those who “died for their country,” face it. To many it’s about the beach, traffic, barbecue and feigned patriotism. The flag-waving fool, the bumper sticker tool, the echo chamber, playbook patriot. Too many pay lip service to patriotism, the flag and now, the war on terrorism. I hate war. I’m not a pacifist. Wars can be necessary. I just don’t think we’ve seen one for over seventy (70) years.
Cicero said, “An unjust peace is better than a just war.”
George Herbert said, “War is death’s feast.”
And I say that any American who believes that wars are necessary and noble in all cases that we insinuate ourselves is an idiot.
