LIONEL PODCAST: Media Overkill and the Eery Ordinariness of Mass and Serial Murderers

Know your nomenclature. Mass murder versus serial murder. See any differences? There are plenty and none. It depends what you think. There’s a scary ordinariness to these people. They look like you and me and are absolutely unremarkable. Except for when they kill. If you want to see institutional psychopathy look no further Penn State higher-ups who looked the other way with Sandusky. But while we’re at it, see if you know anyone who sounds like the following.

Hervey Cleckley’s List of Psychopathy Symptoms:
1. Considerable superficial charm and average or above average intelligence.
2. Absence of delusions and other signs of irrational thinking.
3. Absence of anxiety or other “neurotic” symptoms. Considerable poise, calmness and verbal facility.
4. Unreliability, disregard for obligations, no sense of responsibility, in matters of little and great import.
5. Untruthfulness and insincerity.
6. Antisocial behavior which is inadequately motivated and poorly planned, seeming to stem from an inexplicable impulsiveness.
7. Inadequately motivated antisocial behavior.
8. Poor judgment and failure to learn from experience.
9. Pathological egocentricity. Total self-centeredness and an incapacity for real love and attachment.
10. General poverty of deep and lasting emotions.
11. Lack of any true insight; inability to see oneself as others do.
12. Ingratitude for any special considerations, kindness and trust.
13. Fantastic and objectionable behavior, after drinking and sometimes even when not drinking. Vulgarity, rudeness, quick mood shifts, pranks for facile entertainment.
14. No history of genuine suicide attempts.
15. An impersonal, trivial, and poorly integrated sex life.
16. Failure to have a life plan and to live in any ordered way  (unless it is for destructive purposes or a sham).
Robert Hare’s Checklist of Psychopathy Symptoms:
1. GLIB AND SUPERFICIAL CHARM — the tendency to be smooth, engaging, charming, slick, and verbally facile. Psychopathic charm is not in the least shy, self-conscious, or afraid to say anything. A psychopath never gets tongue-tied. He can also be a great listener, to simulate empathy while zeroing in on his targets’ dreams and vulnerabilities, to be able to manipulate them better.
2. GRANDIOSE SELF-WORTH — a grossly inflated view of one’s abilities and self-worth, self-assured, opinionated, cocky, a braggart. Psychopaths are arrogant people who believe they are superior human beings.
3. NEED FOR STIMULATION or PRONENESS TO BOREDOM — an excessive need for novel, thrilling, and exciting stimulation; taking chances and doing things that are risky. Psychopaths often have a low self-discipline in carrying tasks through to completion because they get bored easily. They fail to work at the same job for any length of time, for example, or to finish tasks that they consider dull or routine.
4. PATHOLOGICAL LYING — can be moderate or high; in moderate form, they will be shrewd, crafty, cunning, sly, and clever; in extreme form, they will be deceptive, deceitful, underhanded, unscrupulous, manipulative and dishonest.
5. CONNING AND MANIPULATIVENESS — the use of deceit and deception to cheat, con, or defraud others for personal gain; distinguished from Item #4 in the degree to which exploitation and callous ruthlessness is present, as reflected in a lack of concern for the feelings and suffering of one’s victims.
6. LACK OF REMORSE OR GUILT — a lack of feelings or concern for the losses, pain, and suffering of victims; a tendency to be unconcerned, dispassionate, coldhearted and unempathic. This item is usually demonstrated by a disdain for one’s victims.
7. SHALLOW AFFECT — emotional poverty or a limited range or depth of feelings; interpersonal coldness in spite of signs of open gregariousness and superficial warmth.
8. CALLOUSNESS and LACK OF EMPATHY –  a lack of feelings toward people in general; cold, contemptuous, inconsiderate, and tactless.
9. PARASITIC LIFESTYLE – an intentional, manipulative, selfis, and exploitative financial dependence on others as reflected in a lack of motivation, low self-discipline and the inability to carry through one’s responsibilities.
10. POOR BEHAVIORAL CONTROLS –  expressions of irritability, annoyance, impatience, threats, aggression and verbal abuse; inadequate control of anger and temper; acting hastily.
11. PROMISCUOUS SEXUAL BEHAVIOR — a variety of brief, superficial relations, numerous affairs, and an indiscriminate selection of sexual partners; the maintenance of numerous, multiple relationships at the same time; a history of attempts to sexually coerce others into sexual activity (rape) or taking great pride at discussing sexual exploits and conquests.
12. EARLY BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS — a variety of behaviors prior to age 13, including lying, theft, cheating, vandalism, bullying, sexual activity, fire-setting, glue-sniffing, alcohol use and running away from home.
13. LACK OF REALISTIC, LONG-TERM GOALS — an inability or persistent failure to develop and execute long-term plans and goals; a nomadic existence, aimless, lacking direction in life.
14. IMPULSIVITY – the occurrence of behaviors that are unpremeditated and lack reflection or planning; inability to resist temptation, frustrations and momentary urges; a lack of deliberation without considering the consequences; foolhardy, rash, unpredictable, erratic and reckless.
15. IRRESPONSIBILITY — repeated failure to fulfill or honor obligations and commitments; such as not paying bills, defaulting on loans, performing sloppy work, being absent or late to work, failing to honor contractual agreements.
16. FAILURE TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR OWN ACTIONS – a failure to accept responsibility for one’s actions reflected in low conscientiousness, an absence of dutifulness, antagonistic manipulation, denial of responsibility, and an effort to manipulate others through this denial.
17. MANY SHORT-TERM RELATIONSHIPS — a lack of commitment to a long-term relationship reflected in inconsistent, undependable, and unreliable commitments in life, including in marital and familial bonds.
18. JUVENILE DELINQUENCY — behavior problems between the ages of 13-18; mostly behaviors that are crimes or clearly involve aspects of antagonism, exploitation, aggression, manipulation, or a callous, ruthless tough-mindedness.
19. REVOCATION OF CONDITION RELEASE — a revocation of probation or other conditional release due to technical violations, such as carelessness, low deliberation or failing to appear.
20. CRIMINAL VERSATILITY — a diversity of types of criminal offenses, regardless if the person has been arrested or convicted for them; taking great pride at getting away with crimes or wrongdoings.

Spot the killer. Spot your neighbor. Spot yourself. Look at the systematic psychopathy of the feller we give a badge and a gun to. It’s sickeningly simple to see their systematic transformation.

On that happy note, have a great night.

LIONEL PODCAST: The Illusion of Causation and the Politics of Commercial Exploitation

The horrors of bad theatre and our futile quest for causation and control. Horror is a strong word. But it’ll have to do in explaining what I saw, entitled Lady and the Champ. The Khmer Rouge was prickly heat compared to this psychic molestation. After I purge my soul of that hour that I’ll never get back, I explicate the sheer idiocy in trying to apply a causation model to the horror that was Colorado yesterday.

And speaking of exploitation and the shape-shifting world of delusional self-promotion. There are few words at my disposal that can even come close to explaining how insane George Zimmerman must be along with his “lawyer” Mark O’Mara in appearing on any TV show whilst a second degree murder charge is pending against him. Seriously, no words. Not to mention he has his immunity mini-trial pending wherein he could be cut loose by a sympathetic judge bolstered with the full faith and support of a public who empathize with Ol’ Zimm. I don’t want to go all Nancy Grace on you, but this representation is worse than anyone can imagine. You never win in an interview and upon close inspection you can see how the piece was surgically edited in a slapdash embroidery. See for yourself.

And lighten up. Remember, you too will die.

LIONEL PODCAST: Agamous. Say the Word. It’s Beautiful.

When you understand what a director does you’ll know how to frame your life. Listen to how this podcast in particular meanders, winds and finds itself. And listen in particular to the end wherein you’re encouraged to know which chapter of your life you’re in. I see my life as a series of chapters or, and here comes the Hitchcock reference, scenes. A director frames the scene. You frame your life. Think about it.

It is fundamentally American to fear, exclude and even hate. Thought is protected. That is being American. Freedom’s a bitch. Free will, free love, free clinic, born free. When the word “free” is used look how often it’s associated with something not so nice or negative. I remember that old joke wherein someone sings “Born free, my father’s a doctor.” That cracked me up as a kid.

I think it stinks that the Boy Scouts eliminate gay folks. But, it’s their right. Eve if it’s wrong.

LIONEL PODCAST: What Do the Media Hate About the Truth?

Intellectually unencumbered and free from the ligature and yoke of convention. And my commentaries as well. This is perhaps one of my finest compendia of the issues of my day. Note I say my day. Seriously. And please note that as I have been in a new-hour induced coma for the past three weeks, I apologize in advance for anything I say that might inadvertently offend.

Drone alone. Did you ever wonder why we’re so drone and UAV obsessed? Well, too bad. I have. Enjoy.

LIONEL PODCAST: The Power and Magic of Wonder and True Awe.

Hacking Zeus. Who says particle physics isn’t knee-slapping good craic? Look carefully at this. This is the password of Gawd.

The child is the perfect human unit. And there’s nothing as important as this idea. The child’s mind is the perfect model for the acceptance of knowledge. Children are fearless, funny, open-minded. They don’t know hatred or bigotry. They want to play and playing means learning. They’re not embarrassed at failure or even getting hurt. In fact, parents teach them to cry. Parents’ looks of horror reinforces the connection between fear and sadness and terror. The human being is perfect up to the age of six (6). After that, learning kicks in and it’s all downhill until death. And that’s why when they are hurt, it should be full and open warfare against those who’d dare to harm them.

Gotta love a physics joke. Better yet, you have to love physics. It’s not a subject; it’s the rules.

Dark matter matters? Scaffolding.

For the first time, a team of astronomers has “observed” a filament of dark matter connecting two neighboring galaxy clusters. Dark matter is a type of matter that interacts only very weakly with light and itself. It’s very nature is mysterious. Mapping the dark matter filament’s gravity was the key to the breakthrough. The result is considered a crucial first step by scientists. It provides the first direct evidence that the universe is filled by a lacework of dark matter filaments, upon which the visible matter in the universe is distributed like small beads. Gizmag

LIONEL PODCAST: Stop Questioning God, Country and Official History. Do As You’re Told.

We need a new word for lie. Why do you believe anything anyone on news commentary shows says? My favorite is the idea that MSDNC with everyone’s favorite neo-sage Ms. Maddow is somehow immune from bias. You’ve got to be kidding me. Just once I’d love to have her address just why and how I’m supposed to overlook the fact that she’s the rodeo clown for GE, a defense contractor and major recipient of TARP money. Immelt was in bed with Barry O but we’re not so sure now. I chortle hyena-like when she gives me that stern, knitted brown thing and actually thinks that I don’t get the fraud. She’s a nice enough person, sure, but come on, Rachel. You’re a shill for 44 and just once I wish you’d stop leaning forward and come clean. And what ever happened to that “lean forward” shite?

Control and order. Friday was the 13th. Remember, triskaidekaphobia means nothing. But every news monkey will make some reference to it now and then and especially when the news is slow and for reasons we’ll never know. But it’s no more ridiculous than any other belief in a control system that exists externally. As Deepak Chopra would say . . . oh, for Chrissakes, who the hell cares what Deep Pocket says. And if you’re in need of random, baseless cosmic consciousness blather here’s your own Random Deepak Chopra Quote Generator.

LIONEL PODCAST: Nescience. The American Way.

My, how they love to laugh. It’s the universal response to anything different scary or challenging. With the 65th anniversary of Roswell, the usual suspects laugh and chortle out of, frankly, nervousness. And absolute nescience. Look no further than 9/11 mythology. Some of the stories that have been woven and constructed are absolutely ridiculous: impossible concoctions of manufactured fact. But, alas, why bother. Myth gives people comfort. Laughing away that which ails you. That which is discomfiting, bothersome. Don’t feel bad. It’s the American way.

App-solutely scary. You’re under complete and total surveillance. At all times. Everywhere. So, wouldn’t it make sense to record the government ad cops. Well, Sparky, how naive are you. Well, the ACLU has come up with an app for smartphones. Sorry, iPhone, this is for droids only. The app allows you to chronicle and memorialize police encounters, especially stop and frisk moments of temporary custodial interrogation. Let’s hear it for freedom.

LIONEL PODCAST: Staring at the World Again

Shaw ’nuff. George noted, “A man of great common sense and good taste – meaning thereby a man without originality or moral courage.” I defy you to find a more beautiful thought. It’s tough being unique and original. Just ask the Kardashians. I kid of course. But this posed fascinating point. Being nice and accommodating and the like often involves capitulation and resignation. And that’s anathema to the creative, bright spirit.

Insanely obvious. The idea of having requisite specific intent nullified by insanity confounds many. And I can understand why.

LIONEL PODCAST: The Beginning Is Near

The parallel universe. Welcome back, spiritual carpooler. Have you adjusted yet? Have you figured out that you’re starring in the most frightening reality show of its kind. This week with Higgs Boson verified I wept figuratively. The discovery was colossal. And yet my world stares in rapt attention as Chris Christie shreds the last vestige of a career hat was based on bluster, blather and air. And we laugh at this piteous churl and he just doesn’t get it. We can’t get enough of the emotionally tentative. And yet we found one of Gawd’s passwords and not a peep.

Synchronized nescience. When the Fourth rolled around the seals barked, sheeple were herded to stare, all while we celebrated a country who’s disappearing before your very eyes. Shhhh! They’ll hear you. Don’t wake them. They’re better off not knowing. Americans love to wave flags. That’s it. To pretend they get it. To imagine and truly believe that “patriotism” is a ceremonial dance. Bowing, gesturing and pretending. Pretending to understand.

A killer walks and the system works. You heard me, Sparky. It worked. Liberty’s a bitch and due process is her pimp. And yet the most amazing news, as stated supra, was all but forgotten, dismissed and ignored. Here’s my paean to the human mind and the seduction of discovery.

LIONEL PODCAST: The 236th Fourth of July and the Myth of Liberty

Happy Birthday, us! Note the exclamation point. Yes, I’m screaming it. You do the same. Please. Fireworks bore me to the core. Crowds do nothing for me. Have you ever seen a fireworks display and thought, “Now, that was really worth fighting the traffic and seas of humanity. I’m fulfilled now. I can die a happy man.” No, no one has.

Below please find my encomium and paean to that which makes us great. See for yourself and spread the word. Feliz cumpleaños, America.
