A war with Iran would not be another limited Middle Eastern operation that politicians could package into a briefing, salute and forget. It could become a regional catastrophe within hours. Iran possesses missiles, drones, proxy forces and the ability to threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, an important energy corridor. Oil prices could explode, markets could convulse and American families would pay through gasoline, food, transportation and inflation.
Israel, Gulf states, American bases and commercial vessels could all become targets. Hezbollah, militias in Iraq and Syria and the Houthis could open multiple fronts simultaneously. Cyberattacks could strike banks, utilities, communications and infrastructure far beyond the battlefield. Civilian casualties would mount while millions could be displaced across an already unstable region.
And then comes the question Washington never answers before war begins: what is the objective? Regime change? Nuclear disarmament? Punishment? Occupation? Each possibility invites escalation, retaliation and mission creep. Iran is not Iraq. It is larger, more populous, mountainous and networked throughout the region.
The loudest advocates will promise precision, speed and victory. History suggests something uglier: funerals, debt, censorship, economic pain and another generation asking why the adults never considered what happened after the first missile was launched.
