LIONEL PODCAST: You Don’t Know Scheiße About History

The history you know is anything resembling history. What the American public craves is a tragedy with a happy ending,” William Dean Howells supra said. I would say the same for history. Especially. I am fascinated by the the idea of why civil wars are so unique in our human appreciation. Thucydides said, “The people made their recollections fit in with their sufferings.” Professor David Blight in this wonderful series references these inter alia. It’s brilliant and I commend it to you.

From the horse’s mouth. “I, Herodotus of Halicarnassus, am here setting forth my history, that time may not draw the color from what man has brought into being, nor those great and wonderful deeds, manifested by both Greeks and non-Greeks, fail of their report, and, together with all this, the reason why they fought one another.” Whose history? Whose perspective?

LIONEL PODCAST: The Insane Confederate Flag Debate Is a Diversion for Those Too Stupid to Know History

United Daughters of the Confederacy

How can this be? This woman from the United daughters of the Confederacy?! This can’t be. Hasn’t she been watching the news and CNN in particular? And what about Civil war reenactments and those who collect memorabilia and historical relics? How do you even address those killed. Civil War deaths it is now estimated could range from 617,877 to 851,066, and he settles on an estimate of 750,000 dead. How do you address honoring the dead – if you do at all – who fought for a flag that revisionists now want, in effect, banned. Is this woman mourning the death of slavery? As the usual suspects and autodidact idiots who wouldn’t know Appomattox from a hole in the ground and they simply don’t care. They’re too busy enjoying the warm glow of manufactured issues to waste any discussion of vexillology.

Robert Edward Lee commandied the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865. You must have heard of it. It was in all the papers.

A Savannah, Georgia, woman is working to break down barriers and stereotypes by joining the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Georgia Benton is now the first African-American in the state to become a member.

Georgia on my mind. Will the UDC be forced to shutter as the revisionists gain temporary power? Does this woman have any idea of what she’s honoring by joining? “There are thousands of African-Americans who participated in the Civil War.  Not only on the Union side, but on the Confederate side,” Benton said. Many people do not realize African-Americans participated on both sides of the Civil War. They served the Confederacy in various ways, including in battle. Now this Savannah native wants to make sure people like her great-grandfather are not forgotten. Wow. Simply . . . wow.

LIONEL PODCAST: Confederate Flag Vexillology & American Media Idiocy

Et tu, Kanye? So, is Mr. west a bigot or a rube? Wait, let me rephrase that. No, on second thought, let it stand. Confederate flag talk is a waste of time and a perennial diversion. Let me explicate further herein. Or, rather, let me try to wade through the hyperbole and misinformation and distraction and obfuscation and deliberate propaganda. The subject matter enjoys the trivialization of pop media simplicity. Remember, we are a country that has been for days enthralled and caught in a transcendental rapture over the President use of the dread N-word. Behold our jejune appreciation of and for the irrelevant. Our appreciation for racial matters is unicellular and one-dimensional. And I’m being kind. We prefer the ideological low hanging fruit and issues that require little to no heavy lifting intellectually. As is usually the case, when we know nothing of history for perspective we make it up on the spot and dig our heels in. As Tolstoy reminds us, “History would be a wonderful thing if only it were true.”
