The Normalization of Madness: How We Learned to Accept Media Insanity

13 JUL 2026.

We have lost our minds, and the most frightening part is that we have become completely accustomed to it. Regarding news and media, insanity is no longer the exception. It is the operating system. We wake up every morning to hysteria, outrage, manufactured emergencies, anonymous sources, breathless speculation and commentators screaming with absolute certainty about events they barely understand.

And nobody stops anymore to ask the simplest question: Do we actually know this?

News has become entertainment. Commentary has become tribal warfare. Allegations become facts within minutes. Rumors become headlines. Speculation becomes evidence. A social-media post becomes a source, a source becomes confirmation and confirmation becomes conventional wisdom before anyone has bothered to verify the original claim.

We no longer wait. We no longer investigate. We react.

The truly astonishing part is how normal this now feels. People casually accept that yesterday’s supposedly earth-shattering story may disappear tomorrow without correction, explanation or apology. The same commentators who were spectacularly wrong last week return today with precisely the same confidence. Nobody remembers. Nobody keeps score.

We have become addicted to emotional acceleration. Everything must be shocking, historic, devastating, explosive or unprecedented. There is no room for uncertainty. No patience for nuance. No tolerance for saying, “I don’t know.”

And social media has made everything worse. Everyone is now a reporter, prosecutor, detective, medical examiner, intelligence analyst and constitutional scholar, usually within five minutes of reading a headline.

Perhaps the greatest act of rebellion today is simply to stop. Ask questions. Demand evidence. Separate what you know from what you think, believe, suspect, hope or fear.

Because the madness is no longer shocking.

Our willingness to accept it is.

Carole King performed Tapestry live in its entirety at Hyde Park in London on July 3, 2016, as part of British Summer Time Hyde Park. It was especially significant because it marked her first full concert in the UK in 27 years.

The show celebrated the 45th anniversary of Tapestry and included classics such as “I Feel the Earth Move,” “So Far Away,” “It’s Too Late,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” She also performed other songs from her extraordinary songwriting career.

The concert was later released as Tapestry: Live in Hyde Park in 2017.

A remarkable performance: intimate songs written for a living room somehow worked beautifully before a massive Hyde Park audience.
