The Refusal to Recognize Reality and Its Pain

15 OCT 2026.

Wall Street may finally be waking up to the financial risks behind the artificial intelligence gold rush. Volta, a newly established infrastructure company, is attempting to borrow $5 billion to construct a massive data center in Norway. But investors are suddenly getting nervous. Imagine that.

Despite more than $450 billion in artificial intelligence-related debt deals this year, lenders are beginning to question whether this extraordinary spending frenzy is sustainable. JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs are marketing Volta’s financing, but investors are demanding greater protections and interest rates of at least 11 percent. That’s expensive money.

Here’s the fascinating part. Volta was founded only in February and has virtually no operating history. Its business model depends heavily on Anthropic, the artificial intelligence developer, purchasing enormous quantities of computing capacity. Yet lenders remain uncertain about Anthropic’s financial strength and contractual commitments.

Apollo reportedly plans to provide $1.5 billion, but that hasn’t eliminated broader concerns.

Morgan Stanley reports that artificial intelligence financing slowed considerably in September, with further weakness anticipated.

The larger question is unavoidable. Are we witnessing the construction of tomorrow’s technological infrastructure or the inflation of another spectacular financial bubble?

Remember the dot-com catastrophe. Remember investors convinced that traditional financial fundamentals no longer mattered.

History doesn’t repeat itself perfectly. But sometimes it sends an unmistakable warning.

Exclusive: Volta’s $5 billion debt deal is a pulse check on the AI-financing boom

Debt marketed this week for an Anthropic-backed project in Norway shows lenders’ skittishness; high interest rates and a credit-rating provision.
