The Strait of Hormuz, Dashed Dreams and the Intellectual Destruction of A Political Trajectory

21 JUN 2026.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, even if achieved tomorrow, would not instantly solve the global oil crunch, and therein lies President Trump’s continuing dilemma. Opening the strait is a necessary condition for recovery, but it is far from sufficient. Tankers that have been anchored for months cannot simply sprint to market. Cargoes must be inspected, shipping schedules reestablished, ports coordinated and refineries prepared to receive crude in an orderly fashion. Even then, oil loaded today will not become gasoline or diesel in consumers’ hands for weeks. Production itself must normalize as fields, pipelines and export terminals return to full operation. Most underestimated of all is the mine threat. If Iran seeded shipping lanes with naval mines, clearance operations could take months, and insurers will not restore confidence until routes are independently certified safe. War risk premiums may remain prohibitively high, discouraging many operators from returning immediately. Markets react in seconds, but physical oil moves slowly. This means Trump could find himself in the politically uncomfortable position of presiding over a diplomatic or military success while consumers continue to endure elevated fuel prices and economic anxiety. The public often expects immediate results, yet energy logistics obey the laws of physics, engineering and risk management rather than political timetables. The net result is that even under the most optimistic scenario, meaningful relief for world oil markets is likely measured not in days but in many weeks, perhaps even months.
