A digraph is the two-letter prefix used at the beginning of many CIA cryptonyms. It generally identified a geographic area, organizational component or operational category. The remaining letters formed the distinctive name assigned to a particular project, operation, asset or person. MKULTRA, for example, combined the MK digraph associated with the CIA’s Technical Services Staff and the identifying word ULTRA. PBSUCCESS was the cryptonym for the CIA operation directed against Guatemala’s Árbenz government. TPAJAX identified the 1953 covert operation in Iran. AMLASH concerned a Cuban figure and related operations against Fidel Castro. FUBELT referred to covert CIA activities involving Chile during the rise of Salvador Allende. These prefixes should not automatically be treated as ordinary abbreviations. PB, TP, AM, FU and MK were not necessarily phrases whose individual letters expanded into recognizable English words. They functioned as administrative markers understood within the intelligence system. That is why popular interpretations such as “MK means Mind Kontrol” may sound persuasive while lacking documentary support. A cryptonym concealed the subject while allowing officials to discuss it efficiently in cables, memoranda and financial records. Once the system is understood, names that appear mysterious become structured labels combining a coded category with a unique identifier.
