Kurt Elling joins Germany’s magnificent WDR Big Band for a spectacular reinvention of Joe Jackson’s 1982 classic “Steppin’ Out.” What began as a sleek synthesizer-driven celebration of Manhattan nightlife becomes a sophisticated explosion of brass, swing and jazz improvisation. Elling’s extraordinary baritone combines impeccable phrasing with playful scat singing while Michael Abene’s brilliant arrangement gives the orchestra room to soar. Originally released in February 2025, this interpretation demonstrates how a great song can transcend generations and genres. It’s Joe Jackson reimagined through the musical sophistication of Count Basie and modern orchestral jazz.
